Humane Society:

If you make your way to Chico's local shelter, be sure to check the socialization book and read comments about the dogs you are considering.

There are some wonderful pets available. Remember, new arrivals are just as important to exercise and care for as much as the long time sheltered dogs.

Before taking any shelter dog into its new home, I recommend at least 1 hour of exercise such as park walking. When you bring the dog into the house for the first time, take it on a tour while on leash and do not allow the dog access to the bedrooms, bathrooms or kitchen until it has adjusted to its new home. If the dog shows signs of stress, do not allow children near the animal.
